Why people look for an alternative
Almost always for one of three reasons. Where the call data ends up. The pricing model, because a flat monthly fee does not fit when call volume moves up and down. And the language, because an agent that sounds good in English can sound off in European Spanish.
None of the three is settled by a feature table. Voice agent platforms do very similar things and differ in how they do them.
Where your calls are processed
This is the criterion that separates them most and appears least in comparisons. The Retell AI compliance page (docs.retellai.com/general/compliance), checked on 4 October 2026, is explicit about it: «We do not currently operate services within the European Union». They comply with GDPR by relying on AWS and offer a data processing addendum with standard contractual clauses.
That is not a breach. It is a valid and very common legal mechanism. But it is different from processing physically happening in the EU, and that difference matters when your customer is a public body, a clinic, or anyone who asks you in writing where the recordings live.
Lera stores calls, transcripts and recordings in the European Union. Handling a call also involves vendors headquartered outside the EU (synthetic voice or the language model, for example), some with servers in the EU and all under standard contractual clauses. The full list, with the location of each one, is on the Lera subprocessors page.
What Retell AI does well
Worth saying, because a comparison with only one winner is useless for deciding. Retell has SOC 2, offers a business associate agreement for HIPAA-covered workloads, lets you set retention per agent from one day to two years, lets you choose per agent what data is stored, and serves recordings through signed URLs.
Their documentation is extensive, their integration ecosystem is larger and they have been at it longer. If your operation is in the United States, or the healthcare requirement weighs more than the European one, it is a solid option.
Price is not a single number
Most platforms publish a per-minute rate, but that figure depends on the voice and the language model you use. Changing the voice can move the price more than changing vendor.
In Lera the per-minute rate comes from the agent configuration. It starts at €0.073 per minute with the cheapest voice and model, and goes up from there. Billing is per second, with no monthly fee and no rounded-up minutes.
What to ask before signing
Five yes-or-no questions that prevent surprises. Where audio is processed and stored. Whether there is a minimum fee on top of usage. Whether you can turn call recording off. How long transcripts are kept and whether you decide that. And whether you can take your history with you the day you leave.
If a platform will not answer one of them in writing, that is already the answer.
